What do Consumers Consider Before They Choose? Identification from Asymmetric Demand Responses

چکیده
Abstract Consideration set models generalize discrete-choice by relaxing the assumption that consumers consider all available options. Determining which options were considered has previously required either survey data or restrictions on how attributes affect consideration utility. We provide an alternative route. In full-consideration models, choice probabilities satisfy a symmetry property analogous to Slutsky in continuous-choice models. This breaks down when changes characteristics perturb consideration. show are constructively identified from resulting asymmetries. validate our approach lab experiment where sets known and then apply framework study “smart default” policy Medicare Part D, wherein automatically reassigned lower-cost prescription drug plans with option of opting out. Full-consideration imply such will be ineffective because opt out avoid switching costs. Allowing for inattention, we find defaulting produces negligible welfare benefits average, but only who would save at least $300 large benefits.

What Do Consumers Consider Before They Choose? Identification from Asymmetric Demand Responses∗
Consideration set models relax the assumption that consumers are aware of all available options. Thus far, identification arguments for these models have relied either on auxiliary data on what options were considered or on instruments excluded from consideration or utility. In a discrete choice framework subsuming logit, probit and random coefficients models, we prove that utility and consider...
متن کاملWhat Do Consumers Consider Before They Choose? Evidence from Asymmetric Demand Responses∗
Discrete choice models which relax the assumption that consumers consider all available options are known as consideration set models. The applied literature on consideration sets relies for identification on either auxiliary data on what options were considered or on instruments assumed to impact consideration probabilities or utility but not both. We show that a broad class of consideration s...
متن کاملWhat information do consumers consider, and how do they look for it, when shopping for groceries online?☆
Previous research investigating what information shoppers seek when purchasing groceries has used either lab-experiments or observed shoppers in supermarkets. The present research investigates this question in a relatively naturalistic online-grocery environment. Forty participants completed their weekly shopping online while their eye-movements were recorded. Ten of the participants were subse...
متن کاملWhy do People Shop Where They do? The Attributes of Shopping Centres that Determine Where Consumers Choose to Shop
What determines where people shop? Why would people visit one shopping centre rather than another? These questions are important to developers, backers, planners and Government. In addition, there is a need to understand shopping as a fundamental feature of modern society. Attributes such as transport links, parking and choice of major stores are well known as determinants of shopping centre su...

Others, however, deliberately choose not to participate in biometric programs because of their individual beliefs. While these individuals constitute a relatively small minority, they are the most likely contingent to voice their concerns. Their criticism will probably not cause a biometric program to collapse or render it ineffective. However, such criticism could inhibit a biometric program’s...
